It first appeared in Europe in the early 18th century.
First mentioned in Elizabeth Grant’s “The Memoirs of a Highland Lady’s Book” in 1812, it provides step-by-step instructions for various crochet stitches.
It has been used as an inexpensive alternative to lace since the 20th century. It was therefore a huge success until the 1920s. The technique was forgotten between the two world wars. It has become popular again since the 1940s, out of necessity. crochet became popular from the 1970s.
Steel hooks range from 0.4 to 3.5 millimeters; for jobs like lace doilies. Aluminum or thicker plastic hooks range from 2.5 to 19 millimeters.
